The NHS ‘Stoptober‘ campaign, now in its second year, has seen nearly a quarter of a million people pledge to go without smoking for 28 days.
The idea is that if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stay ‘smoke free’.
The problem for many people, however, is that they start eating more.
For starters, your sense of taste and smell begin to improve, and this can transform the most humble of meals turn into a gourmet taste sensation.
But there is a far stronger reason why people turn to food when they quit smoking…
They still have an emotional need to fulfil.
You see, smoking is never about nicotine – it’s about the meaning attached to the cigarettes.
For many people, it’s about stress relief, comfort or company.
The urge to find an alternative source of comfort and stress relief can be powerful, and so many people tend to switch from comfort smoking to comfort eating.
That doesn’t happen so much when you use hypnotherapy to stop smoking, as we can help you identify and deal with the emotional connections to smoking.
